Advent Day 12: Fever FM, 107.3

Fever FM is a radio station that operates out of Harehills, but broadcasts to the whole South Asian community of Leeds. They’re a tremendous locally supportive organisation with a long history in the area.

The radio station started broadcasting full time, live, in March 2007, after gaining their full-time Community radio License from OFCOM. Since then they’ve grown to become the biggest South Asian platform in Leeds.

They broadcast in a number of languages, (English, Urdu / Hindi, Punjabi, and Mirpuri), and their aims and objectives are to give their listeners a platform for their views, while educating, information, entertaining and inspiring the masses.

They have really great interviews, from experts in subjects to councillors, and people with a story to tell and discuss. And lots of music.

Their other aims are to bring the whole community together and promote respect for one another by listening to each other. They serve an under-represented community that can be excluded from mainstream media.

The other fantastic thing that FeverFM does, and what I really want to highlight, is that they recruit and train people of all ages for a wide range of careers within the radio, including presenting and technical skills, alongside IT and life skills. Most of the presenters start as volunteers and go on to professional radio careers. Some even make it to BBC radio as hosts of their own shows.

They have also been a fantastic source of knowledge and sharing information during the pandemic, and their voice has been heard in promoting the vaccine and directing people to testing sites in the area in the earlier lockdowns.

They’re a wonderful resource to have in the area, and even if you’re not from the South Asian community, there’s a lot to enjoy as they are local, and do cover local issues, and they support local initiatives, like Lokesh compèring the Harehills Winter Welcome.

You can find them at their website RadioAsianFever, where you can listen online, you can also catch them on 107.3 FM, and on Twitter
