Welcome to Day 6 of the 2025 Harehills Good News Advent Calendar!
Today’s story is about bravery, creativity, and breaking the silence on a subject that touches far too many lives.
In November, a group of women in Harehills gathered not for a medical lecture, but for an art session with a powerful purpose. Titled “Reimagining Breast Health,” the project invited local women to decorate bras and create mixed-media artwork. The goal was to dismantle the stigma and fear that often surrounds breast cancer screening, replacing clinical anxiety with colour, conversation, and community support.
As a middle-aged man, I know when it is time to step back and let the experts do the talking. This is a story about women’s bodies, women’s health, and women’s experiences, and it deserves to be told by those who understand it best.
The team at East Side Story has covered this beautiful initiative with the depth and sensitivity it deserves. Janine Griffiths has written a fantastic piece that captures the laughter, the art, and the vital conversations that happened in that room.
I strongly encourage you to click the link below to read the full story. It is a reminder that in Harehills, we don’t just face challenges; we paint them, we talk about them, and we support one another through them.
Please, take a moment to check your health, or encourage a loved one to do so. Early screening saves lives.
