Day 14: The Compton Centre: A Community Hub and a Testament to the Importance of Libraries in Harehills

In the heart of Harehills, a vibrant hub of activity buzzes with life: the Compton Centre. This multi-faceted community center has been serving the residents of Harehills for years, providing a welcoming space for people of all ages and backgrounds.

The Compton Centre’s story is intertwined with the history of libraries in Harehills. The original Compton Road Library, a Carnegie library built in 1927, played a vital role in providing access to knowledge and learning for the community.

The Compton Centre Community Hub and Library today was opened in mid-2010s, and had involved demolishing some of the original Carnegie Library building, but adding a multi-story state of the art facility to enhance the services provided to the residents of Harehills and nearby areas. The entrance was moved from the side street to be on the freshly designed new grounds, (which would later come to feature the Hare of Harehills).

Today, the Compton Centre Library and Community Hub continues this legacy, offering a modern and welcoming space for reading, learning, and connecting.

Step inside the Compton Centre, and you’ll find a diverse range of facilities and services:

  • Meeting rooms and event spaces: From community group gatherings to birthday parties, the Compton Centre offers versatile spaces for a variety of events.
  • Library: Explore the world of books and information at the Compton Centre library, a valuable resource for learning and leisure.
  • Community events: The center hosts a variety of community events throughout the year bringing people together and fostering a sense of belonging.

The Compton Centre’s impact extends far beyond its walls. It serves as a vital hub for community support, providing:

  • They host many groups and meetings, including drop in sessions for job hunters, support for cost of living issues, Pension Credit clinics, The Comenius School UK hosted Art Class and an amazing kids club first Monday of the month where young people can build, craft, write, draw, or code a story at these brilliant sessions.
  • Every year they partner with Zero Waste Leeds to act as a drop off, and collection point for the Leeds Winter Coat Appeal, the men’s support group Andy Man Leeds, and they host community meetings and events with the local police

The Compton Centre is more than just a building; it’s a symbol of community spirit and resilience. It’s a place where people connect, learn, and grow together. Whether you’re looking for a place to explore your creativity, or simply connect with your neighbours, the Compton Centre has something to offer everyone in Harehills.

The Compton Centre also serves as a reminder of the importance of libraries in our community. In a time when libraries face funding cuts and reduced hours, it’s crucial to recognize the vital role they play in providing access to information, supporting literacy, and fostering a love of learning. The Compton Centre Library stands as a beacon of knowledge and a testament to the enduring value of libraries in Harehills.
