Day 10: The Story Behind the Harehills “H” Sculpture

As you drive down Harehills Lane on a dark winter’s night, a striking sight emerges from the fog: a giant, illuminated “H” standing tall and proud. This iconic landmark, located just across from the Morrisons supermarket, has become a symbol of Harehills, a beacon of community pride.

But what is the story behind this “H”? We’re delighted to share that we’ve uncovered some answers!

Thanks to some online sleuthing, we’ve discovered that the “H” was most likely created by artist Ian Kirkpatrick, a Canadian living in the UK. Kirkpatrick was also the artist behind the “Hare of Harehills” sculpture, commissioned by East Street Arts in 2017. Both sculptures were fabricated by Bentley Fabs, who feature both projects on their website, suggesting they were created around the same time.

While the exact date of installation remains uncertain, photos from Bentley Fabs show the “H” being installed in snowy conditions, suggesting it was likely erected in the winter of 2016-2017, possibly even a few months before the “Hare of Harehills” was unveiled in the spring.

The “H” stands as a testament to the creativity and community spirit that thrives in Harehills. It’s a visual reminder of the neighborhood’s identity, a symbol of resilience and strength. Its presence adds a unique character to the landscape, a touch of artistry that brightens even the darkest nights.

Whether it’s a beacon of hope, a symbol of community, or simply a striking piece of public art, the Harehills “H” has become an integral part of the neighbourhood’s identity. It’s a reminder that even in the midst of bustling city life, there’s always room for art, creativity, and a symbol that unites us all.
