The past few weeks have seen a disturbing surge of violence and unrest across our nation. From Southport to Sunderland, and from Liverpool to London, our streets have become battlegrounds for those peddling hate and fear. Here in Harehills, we know the pain of such unrest all too well. We’ve witnessed the destruction, the injuries, and the fear that grips a community when violence takes hold.
Yet, amidst the chaos, we’ve also seen the very best of Harehills. We’ve seen ordinary people, young and old, step up to protect their neighbours, their streets, and their community. We’ve seen courage, compassion, and a deep love for this place we call home.
Here in Harehills, recent unrest brought to light the challenges faced by our Roma neighbours. While a small number were involved, it’s crucial to remember that many are kind, loving individuals who contribute positively to Harehills. We condemn violence regardless of background or injustice, but it’s equally important to acknowledge the diversity within our community and not paint everyone with the same brush.
That’s the Harehills we celebrate on HarehillsLove – the Harehills of resilient spirits, vibrant cultures, and neighbours who care for one another. And that’s the spirit we need to reignite in our nation.
Condemning Violence, Embracing Unity and Love
Whether it stems from far-right extremists spreading lies, or from marginalised groups lashing out in frustration, violence is never the answer. It destroys lives, tears communities apart, and leaves behind only scars and division.
We condemn the actions of those who resort to violence, regardless of their background or the injustices they face. Violence only perpetuates the cycle of pain and suffering. It is not a solution; it is a dead end.
We cannot remain silent in the face of violence, no matter its source or justification.
Celebrating the Protectors and Uplifters
In these dark times, let us turn our attention to the light. Let us celebrate the countless individuals across our country who are working tirelessly to build bridges, mend wounds, and foster peace and understanding. Let us lift up the voices of those who preach love, not hate.
Let us be inspired by the brave young men who fought a bus fire in Harehills, risking their own safety for the good of their community. Let us be inspired by the community leaders who work tirelessly to address the root causes of unrest. Let us thank the community leaders who went out into violence and tempered hotheads with peace. Let us be inspired by the everyday acts of kindness and compassion that remind us that love is stronger than hate.
A Call for National Unity and Compassion
The unrest we’re witnessing is not just about Harehills, or Southport, or Sunderland, or Liverpool, or London. It’s about the state of our nation. It’s about the divisions that fester beneath the surface, threatening to tear us apart.
We must confront the root causes of this unrest: the inequalities, the discrimination, the fear, and the anger that fuel extremism and violence. We must come together as a nation, united in our commitment to peace, justice, and compassion.
Let us not allow hate and division to win. Let us celebrate the diversity and strength of our communities. Let us stand up for what is right, and let us work tirelessly to build a future where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.
We are Harehills, we are Britain, and we are stronger together.
