Welcome to the Advent Calendar, day 19. In the heart of Harehills is a fantastic facility with so much going on, and it is there for the people!
Compton Community Hub gets a lot of mentions as part of other posts in the calendar because it’s such a fantastic community resource that has empowered the people of Harehills in a myriad of ways.
A community hub is a local resource, set up by Leeds City Council so that families can access support and services in a central location. They offer a range of services, including:
- Library services
- Housing services
- Education
- Job search and applications
- Access to computers
They can also help personal financial management and budgeting, claiming benefits, dropping off forms, and access to wifi. They also offer a a space for the community to meet, for activities for kids during the holidays, and a space for events to happen.
The Compton Centre is a library with a fantastic array of books covering innumerable genres of fiction and topics of non-fiction books. It’s not a full library, but there’s still plenty there, and you can always request books from other librariesIt provides computers to give people access to the world wide web, as well as an educational facility.
It’s been quite a year for the Compton Centre, early in the year they hosted the men’s chorus of Opera North
It is also host to a Code Club and Creator Space – which I find fantastic and exciting, really want to check out at some point, (I’ve recently gotten into electronics projects.
The Compton Centre also has a stage, which means they can host things like poetry readings, as they did for the Fabulous Green Exhibition:
During the Harehills Winter Welcome they held a card making session for kids, which fantastically included simple circuits that would light up the card when the corner was pressed.
