As I’ve mentioned in previous advent day posts, the ward of Gipton and Harehills is one of the youngest wards in Leeds, with over 10,500 young people up to the age of 19. That’s a lot of people to educate, so it was welcome news that there was to be a new school nearby.

Trinity Academy Leeds is part of the Trinity Multi-Academy Trust, a trust that has dedicated itself to improving education in underfunded and underinvested areas. It is unfortunate that areas that lack investment often have young people that struggle for performance. It’s refreshing to have another school taking up the challenge to close the gap. The young people of Gipton and Harehills, and the surrounding area deserve a fair break.
They have been busy engaging with future students and the local community on social media since before they opened, and it’s great to see the next generation so active and creative.
The school is in the process of growing, it took on its first year 7’s in September, or the class of 26 as they are referred to, and as they advance to year 8, the class of 27 will come in, and the school will gradually and inexorably grow.
It joins a roster of amazing schools we have in the area, including Hovingham Primary School, Harehills Primary school, St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School, Co-op Academy Woodlands, Co-op Academy Brownhill, and many more. I’ve picked TAL simply because it’s new, it’s nice to say hello, but many of our schools have done amazing things throughout this year and the pandemic. Feel free to highlight the contributions our schools have made to our community.
There’s a fantastic article in the Yorkshire Evening Post, where TAL’s principal, Kat Cafferky explains what was involved in setting up a brand new school, and the vision and ethos that guides the school. You can find that here.
You can find out more about the school itself at their website, and also their primary Twitter, (they have a lot of Twitter accounts for various features or groups within the school), and you can also follow them on Facebook.
