Advent Day 19: Shantona Women’s & Family Centre

Shantona Women’s and Family Centre is a fantastic organisation that provides women, children, young people and families with an open and transparent support system, using a holistic approach to deal with many diverse and complex issues.

Shantona has been going for over 23 years, starting in 1998 by local Bangladeshi women, starting as a safe space for women and children in the Bangladeshi community, but has grown and expanded advocate for BAME communities across Leeds.

That long history comes with a lot of activity, all the women and families they’ve helped, their well-organised programs, promoting well being, and their work in the local, national and international communities, which is shown in the depth of affection I’ve heard from local residents, also their awards and their ties with other organisations and charities.

Before I talk about what they’ve got going on, I just wanted to call something out from last year, I was having a look at their YouTube channel, and found their Youth Pasta Challenge videos which were tremendously fun, with several different ways to use pasta and veggies, and some interesting editing and presenting. Not strictly relevant, I just found it lovely and fun, so bonus share.

They’ve a healthy holidays event going on from the 20th to the 23rd of December, between 3pm and 7pm with fun-filled activities, including a day trip to Stockheld Park, (for girls aged 11-18), you can find out more about their Healthy Holidays events, and how to register here: https://www.shantona.co.uk/event-fullview/healthy-holidays, please do check in with them first, make sure there are spaces, and just in case with the current rise in Coronavirus cases.

You can find out more about Shatona Women’s and Family Centre and learn about their history, upcoming projects and events, or find support, at their website, (where you can also donate to support this fantastic charity), on Twitter and on their Facebook page.
