Jo Cox was a fantastic MP, genuinely kind, compassionate and ideal representative for her constituency who was taken from us all too soon and far too tragic circumstances. Her legacy has lived on through the Jo Cox Foundation. One of their significant initiatives with the Great Get Together, which Your Space Leeds helped bring to Harehills through a series of events, including a big get together at Harehills Park Bowling Club.
So on July 4th, I went down to Harehills Park. It was a lovely afternoon of food and drink, community groups engaging with people, and adults and young people trying out bowling. The kids really took to it and had a smashing time,
Stalls included Stronger Families Leeds and Bradford, Back to Front and Touchstone Support Centre.
A personal favourite of mine was Back to Front’s microgreens kits. They came in little takeaway boxes, which is excellent symbolism. They also have strawberry plants to give away (which my niece and I have enjoyed this summer).
There was food on with pakora Momtaz’s, and baked goods from volunteers – all of which was very tasty.
Now some epic rain did come and disrupt things late into the event, but people had a fantastic time, and it was good to see people having fun and socialising after the difficult start to the year.
The Jo Cox Foundation has a Great Winter Get Together planned in January. I don’t know what events are taking place in Leeds or Harehills – but if there is something on, I’ll be there because Harehills is a fantastic place when we come together. Hope you’ll join in too.
