Advent Day 9: Skills for Harehills by Canopy Housing

Canopy Housing is a housing charity. It helps the homeless by buying up derelict housing and renovating it, helps tenants help themselves repair and maintain homes, and teaches people vital skills through projects and courses to get jobs.

There is a significant housing problem in this country; there’s not enough, and available housing is very frequently unaffordable. It’s unaffordable that there is a growing segment of our society in poverty and a growing segment that is homeless.

Canopy works to make housing more affordable, it works with people living in homes they can afford to make them safe and comfortable, and it works to spread the skills needed to keep them that way, or for people to go out and get jobs helping others.

They and their army of volunteers do fantastic work and provide homes not just for the homeless but those seeking refuge from domestic violence and a myriad of other things that see people falling into a housing crisis.

There is an excellent emphasis on self-help, and there seems to be fantastic engagement, and they have tremendous success stories.

In 2021 they launched a new training program, Skills for Harehills. Working around the limitations pandemic (i.e. providing participants with PPE and their own toolkits, working in small groups etc…):

  • Placements to work on a construction site a few days a week,
  • Classroom learning,
  • Certificates that are recognisable by potential employers,
  • Along with a host of other benefits and a real sense of camaraderie, (if you completed the course you could keep the PPE and the toolkits)

I’ve barely scratched the surface, so you can find out more about Skills for Harehills on their page and how to get in contact with them for this or future projects you might be interested in.

You can also find Canopy Housing through their own website, Facebook and Twitter feeds
