Bexley Road runs from Elford Grove to St James’ hospital. It’s about 950 feet long, and it can be a busy useful road. However, since 2019 that long walk has been brightened up by a beautiful mural to highlight the great work Getaway Girls has been doing for the past 33 years.

Back when I first saw it, I didn’t know what or who it represented, it was just a beautiful piece of art brightening up a back street of the area, that I spotted during one of my pandemic walks. Then in March this year, it started popping up in the news and I got to learn about this wonderful charity that’s been hard at work in Leeds.
I’m going to borrow a bit from their own website to tell you about what they do:
All young women and girls in Leeds will lead safe, healthy and fulfilled lives
Getaway Girls empowers girls and young women to support each other to build confidence, resilience, raise aspirations, develop new skills and take positive risks in a positive environment which offers co-operation and support.
We achieve this through our strength based approach, recognising young women’s strengths, abilities, talents and lived experience.
Our work is a balance of support, challenge/ opportunities and fun.
The art itself was commissioned by Getaway Girls themselves, and a graffiti artist, (among other terrific skills), Miss Hazard (check out her website here), working with girls from the charity to design a strong beautiful female character that reflected their vision.
So as you’re travelling along Bexley Road, take a moment to take in this amazing sight, and in the meantime, you check out the Getaway Girls website and learn more about what they do, how they do it, and just how much an impact it can have in young women’s lives.
