Young People Learning First Aid at Catch Leeds

For very personal reasons, this story really moves me. No, it doesn’t feature goats, but Catch is more than just about goats. Today, they’re learning to save lives.

They’ve just put this tweet out:

I think this is amazing. I think these young people will have something fantastic for their CV’s, but more than that, the more people out there that can do first aid, the better we all are. I think it’s great that there’ll be first aiders on hand at Catch itself if emergencies happen.

I’ve seen myself what can happen in an emergency situation, when first aiders aren’t available. I will spare you the details, but it was in an office I worked in the better part of two decades ago. A middle aged man, had a heat attack on the open plan floor. It was traumatic, and there were managers that rushed to his aid. I don’t think any of them were trained in CPR, there was someone on the phone talking them through.

The officer had two first aiders, but one was off that day, and the other on lunch. Two, out of two hundred workers.

Unfortunately the man died.

So any efforts to get more people in society trained in first aid, how to react in an emergency, are massive benefit to society as a whole.

If I were recruiting, and I had two similar people, but one was trained in first aid? I’d take them. I can’t overstate how vital a skill that is.

Come to think of it, I should probably get myself retrained, it’s the better part of fifteen years since I last had any training. These young people are already ahead of me.
