Potternewton Park is host to the impressively over a half a century old Leeds West Indian Carnival. The oldest Carribbean carnival in Europe.
It’s amazing clash of sound, and colours, and people, and amazing costumes, props and music. It is beautiful chaos!
It’s one of the most exciting things to happen in the area, and except for this year due to Covid-19, it happens every year, come rain or shine. It really is amazing to see.
This is just a placeholder article, it will full out more over time – but in the meantime I highly recommend you go over to https://www.leedscarnival.co.uk/ and if you’re interested in the history of the carnival and carnival culture check out https://www.leedscarnival.co.uk/leeds-carnival-50-heritage/
I cannot stress enough, you need to see it, you need to experience it. When its on, get to Potternewton Park for the various events, come join the crowds viewing the Carnival Parade as it winds it way up Harehills Lane and on to Roundhay Road, and then up Chapeltown Road.

Expect to see more here in the future, especially when we learn more about 2021’s Carnival.
